Canadian Dairy Goat Genetic Evaluations

Juvenile Genetic Evaluation and Selection For Dairy Goats (Member Login)

La Société des Éleveurs de Chèvres Laitières de Race du Québec, with the financial support from the Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec, have launched a genetic improvement program for goat milk producers. This is a four year project and is now also supported by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

The objective of this project is to develop a sustainable genetic improvement program for commercial dairy goat producers and breeders. We collect performance data on dairy animals for both milk production and body conformation and use this information to create indices to help aid producers in the selection process. We currently recieve all milk recording information from any Canadian Goat Society (CGS) sanctioned recording program, as well as any CanWest DHI programs. Independent programs maybe accepted upon review. We also currently receive all type classification data from CGS.

A web-based program available on the Internet allows participating producers to enter new parent information and instantly have these young kids evaluated and ranked based on the genetic evaluations of their parents. The evaluations of the parents are updated bi-monthly using new records that accumulate on a regular basis.
