Genetic Evaluations

Genetic Evaluation Program for Canadian Goat Operations

With the ongoing success of the national swine improvement program, CCSI has begun to develop a similar program for the growing goat industry in Canada. The goal of this project is to contribute to the growth and stability of the Canadian Dairy, Meat and Fibre Industries by developing a sustainable genetic improvement program that is affordable, accessible and useful for producers

The program for dairy producers was launched in 2003 as a joint effort supported by the Quebec and Ontario governments: Ministre de l'Agriculture, des Pcheries et de l'Alimentation du Qubec(MAPAQ) and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food.(OMAF). We are currently working with various dairy organizations including La Socit des leveurs de Chvres Laitires de Race du Qubec (SECRLQ),The Canadian Goat SocietyCGS, The Ontario Goat Breeder's Association(OGBA)and The Ontario Goat Milk Producer's Association(OGMPA).

In January 2006, CCSI began working with The Canadian Meat Goat Association (CMGA)(formerly the Canadian Boer Goat Association), to creat a similar program for producers in Canada's growing goat meat industry. Future projects for dairy, meat and fibre goats are being considered. We look forward to working with these associations and their member producers to help foster unity and development in Canadas goat industry.
