Canadian Goat Genetic Evaluation and Juvenile Selection Program

Canadian Goat Genetic Evaluation and Juvenile Selection Program

General Information

With the ongoing success of the national swine improvement program, CCSI has begun to develop a similar program for the growing goat industry in Canada. The goal of this project is to contribute to the growth and stability of the Canadian Dairy, Meat and Fibre Industries by developing a sustainable genetic improvement program that is affordable, accessible and useful for producers.

The program for dairy producers was launched in 2003 as a joint effort supported by the Quebec and Ontario governments: Le Ministre de l'Agriculture, des Pcheries et de l'Alimentation du Qubec and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. We are currently working with various dairy organizations including the SECLRQ, Canadian Goat Society, Ontario Goat Breeders Association and Ontario Goat Milk Producers Association. In January 2006, CCSI began working with the Canadian Meat Goat Association (CMGA), formerly the Canadian Boer Goat Association (CBGA) to pilot a similar program for the growing meat goat industry in Canada. Future projects with the CMGA, OGBA and Canadian National Goat Federation for dairy, meat and fibre goats are being considered. We look forward to working with these associations and their member producers to help foster unity and development in Canadas goat industry.
